Can you get a better setting for a city than that of Kolar, situated on the Deccan Plateau the weather is mild all round the year, of course you do get the odd very hot few days in the summer, the city itself is on the foothil of the glorious Shathashrunga mountain range on the one side and the huge Kolaramma lake on the other side, blessed by godess kolaramma who resides in the ancient Chola built temple in the heart of the city, next to her resides Shiva who is worshipped as Someshwara in the huge and magnificient Someshawara temple.
The temples are an absolute treat to explore built from the hard granite stone which is in abundance in the area, the carvings are intricate and splendid depicting various gods, godessess, dancers , elephants and various other things, there is also engravings in Tamil depicting the supremacy of Cholas on the Kannada lands for a period of time, but now these are the Kannada heartlands once again, the great rivalary between the Tamil Cholas and Kannada Chalukyas was played out in the very same place , ending in the defeat of Cholas and Chalukyan supremacy over the Kannada lands.
